What is Memory and Different Types of Memory

Memory is extremely important part of the computer. Memory is the storage part of the computers. We all need memory to store the information. Memory storage permits us to use the stored information whenever you want in future.

The memory of the computer is mainly divided into two they are:

  1. Primary memory (main memory)
  2. Secondary memory

PRIMARY MEMORY

Memory units are the storage areas in the computer. Primary memory is the main memory of the computer which is capable of storing some information and instruction. It is a volatile memory.

Different types of the primary memory
  • ROM (Read only memory)
  • RAM (Random access memory)

Now let us take a look at them

1. ROM (READ ONLY MEMORY)

In ROM the data is pre-recorded into the ROM at the time of manufacture. Once the data is written in the ROM cannot be erased but only you can read it. The data in the ROM cannot be erased it is stored permanently. Read-only memory(ROM) is a non-volatile memory. ROM stores the sensitive information like some instructions that are required to boot the computer.

Different Kinds of ROM

  • PROM
  • EPROM
  • EEPROM

1. PROM: Programmable Read Only Memory

PROM is a memory on which we can write the information only once and once it is written it cannot be changed.

2. EPROM: Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory

In this memory, the data can be erased and it can be reprogrammed. The data in this can be erased by exposing it to ultraviolet light

3. EEPROM: Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory

In this memory, the data once written can be erased. the data can be erased by exposing it to electrical charge.

2. RAM (Random Access memory)

Random Access memory is one of the most common type of memory in the computers. And this is the place where the data is stored temporarily. It stores the data until the CPU of the computer is running once it is turned off all the data will get erased. Hence it is called as volatile memory.

Different types of RAM

1. EDO RAM (Extended data output RAM)

It is a type of RAM chip that improves the time to read from memory it is used in processors like intel Pentium.

2. Static Random Access Memory (SRAM)

It is a memory that uses the bi-stable latching circuitry to store the data. It is also called as DDR or SD RAM.

SECONDARY MEMORY

The computer will store some large amount of data in secondary memory. This storage is also called as backup storage. This memory provides us to store a large amount of data for a long period of time. Some known devices of secondary storage devices are the hard disk, floppy disk, optical disk, DVD disk, blue ray disk. This memory is a non-volatile memory. The data can be stored permanently in these devices
